With all the ongoing research and development in the skincare industry, it would be interesting to see where skincare technology will be in the next decade or two. Time release formulas and customized skincare are just the tip of the iceberg. Those aren’t even the best of what skincare has to offer in this time and age. Tretinoin and PRP might be the talk of the town these days; but imagine the improvisation of skincare technology in a few more years. This could mean improved techniques and formulations to use tretinoin without harming the moisture barrier; and more efficient ways to stimulate skin collagen and hair growth with one prick rather than fifty.

Some of this might sound crazy, but I bet that’s what people thought before minoxidil was used to regain hair growth or tretinoin was found to be effective in treating acne and wrinkling. But before we dive into a dystopian vision of futuristic skincare, remember that you are a complete and wonderful individual. Skincare shouldn’t be an imposition, but just a preference.

V for Vendetta, BUT a skincare revolution

Imagine wearing masks that have an inner layer that is comfortable and an outer layering with 100% UV protection. In the future I see people walking around outdoors with UV protective full-face masks. Breathable ones which do not trigger acne and have a slight spacing to avoid any skin irritation. This would obviously require a lot of work that considers face shape and attachment techniques (like a tiny belt buckle, button up back or sturdy strings to hold it in place).

We already have UV protective face masks made of special cloth, but the UV protection isn’t usually 100%. Those cloth masks also hug the face tightly which could cause sweating and potential irritation for those with sensitive skin. There are also face shields, but those allow UV penetrate from the sides. Maybe scientists and tech-experts could come up with the perfect UV full face mask that protects everything including inbuilt UV shield areas for the eyes.

Face Masks with Anti-Acne Properties

Since we are living in a world that faces one of the biggest pandemics known in history, covid protective face masks will be around for a while. Since they have become an everyday staple of people’s lives, there will also be a need to produce masks tha prevent acne, sweating and irritation. This might require an inner layer that is similar to the skin structure but also porous in a way that avoids accumulation of sweat within the mask. How will this be done? I have no idea because I’m just here typing out futuristic ideas. I do think face masks will improve in quality and purpose to ensure protection of the skin and prevention of covid.

Public Centric Database System & Clinical trials

Dermatica and other companies have launched systems where buyers send in pictures of their skin concerns and licensed dermatologists customize skincare products and a routine for them online. The products are delivered to your doorstep on a regular basis depending on payment and how long you want to continue with them. It is an easy way of getting skincare consultations and answers at home and online.

Now imagine a world-wide database system set up where people above 18 years can register themselves for relevant clinical trials for products. This would require companies to set up an online system rather than participant recruitment through snowballing, networking or other means. Having an online registered system would also mean people can view other company clinical trials which would ensure transparency of science, research and development. A scary concept but an interesting one to entertain!

Those with concerns about acne, pigmentation dehydration or any other issues could search for relevant ingredient or product trials that fit their criteria. They could sign up for it online and the rest of the screening process could be ensured by those conducting these research trials. This online skincare database system could also impart information product company trials so people can make informed decisions and verify information on products by logging into the database system and checking it.

LED Light Scalp Helmet with Rosemary Infusion

LED helmets for scalp treatment and hair follicle growth are quite popular these days, but also very expensive! Do they work? I’ve heard some people rave about it while others couldn’t care less about the technology.

Maybe in the future, there could be battery operated or solar powered LED helmets that also released rosemary infused ingredients for the scalp to prevent hair loss from DHT and to promote growth. I thought this would be a fun idea, like a two-in-one deal. A former study showed the effectiveness of rosemary compared to minoxidil, so why not add it to the mix of LED helmets?

Will these futuristic skincare ideas happen on Earth or Mars? I’m not sure, but I do know that there is a lot of potential for improved research and development in skincare. Feel free to share your own crazy ideas about the future. Take care of yourselves, until we meet again!
